Development of Artificial Minerals From the start of civilization, man has demonstrated intriguing interest in natural crystals including gems (Kesler Simon, 2015). Later, man used natural minerals such as mica, diamond, corundum, and quartz for different applications including cutting abrasion, and electrical appliances among others (Kogel, 2006). During the Second World War, the demand for natural minerals in technical applications increased significantly and endangered the supply. However, this situation alongside technological advancements had a positive impact because it led to the birth of synthetic crystals (Goodman, 2013). In the synthetic crystal industry, the disciplines of geology, physics, chemistry, ceramics, and metallurgy merge to enable man create a wide variety of synthetic minerals (Degryse Elsen, 2003). Over the years, scientists have used different methods to develop synthetic minerals. The development of artificial minerals has many benefits as discussed in this report. Artificial minerals are minerals made in the laboratory (Jayaraman, 2000). Despite being artificial, these minerals have the same chemical, optical, and physical features associated with natural minerals (Degryse Elsen, 2003).
